![]() ![]() Synology supports upgrading your storage pool, one drive at a time, for volumes using the following formats: SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, and RAID F1. Once the drives arrived, I was ready to upgrade my array. I went with the 3rd option and purchased three Seagate Ironwolf 14tb HDs. Purchase new drives and upgrade the Storage Pool.Reduce the amount of storage allocated to the two Datastores and allocate that space to Volume 1.This is something I had been doing to keep the drive from running out of space.Delete backup data / Media from Volume 1.Recently, I’ve been noticing that I’m beginning to run out of room on Volume 1. ![]() Volume 1 is used for my media server & on-site backups and the other two volumes are used for Datastores for my VMware Home lab, as is the 4th volume, my SSD drives are the “flash” tier of storage for my lab. Storage Pool 1 is split up into 3 different volumes. The SSD drives are setup in a RAID-1 config, netting me a total of 442.7gb of usable space. The first storage pool is setup in a RAID-5 configuration, netting me 7.8TB of usable space. The current setup in my Synology DS1517+, 5-bay NAS is three 4TB SATA drives and two 512gb SSD drives. ![]() never mind, if you dont know what that is.Upgrade Drives in your Synology NAS to Increase Space There will quite a few bits of READ and WRITE to this hard disk due to my new found interest in seedbox and Bukit Timah (. ![]() In Windows and Mac, I also have this new shared folder set up as a network drive and even my dBpoweramp Music Converter (dMC) has its default “Processed” folder for completed music conversion (from FLAC to MP3) set to this folder… I called the SHARE FOLDER, ScratchĪnd then in apps like Download Station of Synology, I tell the app to download to this new Shared Folder. So how do I use this new 3rd Volume ? Well, go to SHARED FOLDER configuration in DSM and set up a new Shared Folder and linked it to the VOLUME 3. Which means I did not shut down the Synology but just open the hard disk case and put it right in. I chose the slot furthest away from the 2 existing hard disks in the DX510. Start by putting in the hard disk (PHYSICALLY) into a spare slot. I dont mind if this volume crashed or have a lot of READ/WRITES to it…. The purpose is to use it as a sort of “transfer” hard disk between the different PCs/Macs at home as well as most importantly, as a place for internet downloads (e.g BT, NZB, Direct Downloads). I have a spare hard disk of 320GB sitting around and I decided I want to set this up in the Synology as a Single Volume on its own. In the former, I used up all the 5 slots and in the latter, I used up 2 slots. I have the Synology DS1511+ and the Synology DX510 Expansion. I am a big fan of Synology Network Storage Devices. ![]()
